Description of osteopathy according to Osteopathy Quebec:

Osteopathy is a manual approach aimed at restoring the functionality of the structures and systems of the human body in order to optimize its self-regulating capacity. This practice is based on in-depth knowledge of health sciences and the interactions necessary for the body's balance.

Through careful and precise palpation, a comprehensive and holistic assessment is conducted to investigate the underlying causes of neuro-musculoskeletal, visceral, and cranial dysfunctions. Each osteopathic treatment is specific and tailored to the individual.

What to expect during your first osteopathy session:

  • First, the osteopath will welcome you into their office and begin with a questionnaire to understand the reason for your visit and ask about your health and medical history.

  • Next, the osteopath will conduct a comprehensive osteopathic evaluation, starting with an overall observation of your posture. They will then assess the mobility of different structures in your body as a whole and, specifically, in certain areas. So don't be surprised if they evaluate a different region than the one you sought their services for.

  • If time and your health condition allow, the osteopath will begin their osteopathic treatment in the same session. Please note that acute conditions may not be treated in the clinic, and a medical consultation may be recommended.

  • During the osteopathic treatment, the osteopath will use techniques to release tension, restore balance, and mobilize structures to help them regain functionality.

The osteopath will conduct a reassessment of your condition using osteopathic methods.

  • Finally, they will explain their osteopathic reasoning, what they have done to help address your issue, and provide you with lifestyle advice. Depending on the case, the osteopath may suggest a follow-up appointment or refer you to another healthcare professional if necessary.

  • Please note that osteopathy sessions do not replace medical visits, and no diagnosis will be provided.

Origin of Osteopathy

Osteopathy was created by physician Andrew Taylor Still in 1874 following a pivotal experience where he successfully cured a child with dysentery using only his hands. He initially acquired his knowledge of medicine through his father, who was also a physician.

During the Civil War, he was deeply affected by his inability to heal his fellow soldiers. Additionally, a few years later, after the deaths of four family members from meningitis, he became increasingly troubled by the limitations of medical and religious practices.

He became obsessed with the idea of more effective healing and immersed himself in the intensive study of the human body. He did not hesitate to exhume bodies from Indian mounds to study anatomy and later pursued medical training at the College of Medicine and Surgery.

In 1892, he founded the American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri, where he trained his children due to the high number of patients seeking treatment. It was at this school that William Gardner Sutherland, the founder of cranial osteopathy, and J.M. Littlejohn, the founder of the British School of Osteopathy, studied. Littlejohn, in turn, taught John Wernham, who established osteopathic education in England, specifically in Maidstone.

Finally, in 1956, the first articles by Rollin F. Becker were published, marking a crucial milestone in the field of osteopathy.
