The Patellofemoral Syndrome

The Patellofemoral Syndrome

Do you have knee pain that bothers you when sitting for long periods? It could be the patellofemoral syndrome.

This syndrome causes insidious and progressive pain, which can result from overuse (e.g., hiking) of the knee or direct trauma (e.g., a fall). But what’s happening in your knee? In fact, everything revolves around the sliding/alignment of the patella. When you bend or straighten your knee, the patella moves. If it slides out of its optimal alignment, it causes pain and sometimes even crepitus.

Why is my patella misaligned? There are predisposing factors such as lack of flexibility and/or weakness in certain thigh muscles, issues with the foot/ankle complex, or hip problems.

What should I do? It is important to consult at the first signs of pain to prevent the chronicizing and the worsening of the condition. In physiotherapy, we use various modalities to reduce pain, manual therapy techniques, taping, postural correction, as well as a strengthening and stretching program to be done at home.
